Commercial Underground Storage Tank Removal

When a property owner faces a contamination event, a failing underground storage tank, or a regulatory notice from the state, the question they really need answered is simple: has this firm actually solved a problem like mine before?

Credentials and certifications are a starting point. What matters more is documented proof: real projects, real regulatory outcomes, and a clear record of getting clients from discovery to closure.

That’s what you’ll find in this section. Aegis Environmental has spent over 25 years handling environmental projects across Indiana and the Midwest. The case studies on this page are drawn from that work: specific situations, the steps Aegis took, and the outcomes that resulted.

See Real Results from Real Projects

Most environmental consulting firms describe what they do. Fewer can show what they have actually accomplished.

This case study library exists to bridge that gap. Each case study published here walks through a real client project: the situation at the start, how Aegis assessed and addressed the problem, and the regulatory outcome at the end.

If you are evaluating environmental consultants for your property, these case studies give you something more useful than a service description. They show you how Aegis works when the pressure is on.

Why Documented Outcomes Should Be Your Standard

Hiring an environmental consultant without reviewing their track record is a significant risk.

Here is why that matters. The goal of environmental remediation is not just to “clean something up.” It is to reach a formal end point recognized by regulators, typically a No Further Action (NFA) determination from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) or the relevant state agency. That determination is what officially closes your environmental liability, clears the property’s title, and lets you move forward as an owner, seller, or developer.

A consultant who cannot document having achieved that outcome for previous clients cannot give you confidence they will achieve it for you.

Aegis has. The case studies in this section reflect that record.

What Our Case Studies Cover

The projects documented here represent the range of environmental consulting work Aegis performs for commercial clients across Indiana. They include:

  • Underground storage tank (UST) management and remediation, covering petroleum releases from heating oil, fuel, and other USTs on commercial and industrial properties
  • Phase II Site Investigations, including targeted soil and groundwater sampling following discovery of potential contamination
  • Contamination remediation and regulatory closure, with full-project management from initial response through final state determination
  • Regulatory compliance coordination, including direct engagement with Indiana state environmental authorities to keep projects moving toward resolution

Each case study is designed to show how Aegis managed the specific complexity of that project, including difficult site access, occupied buildings, multi-phase regulatory processes, and Indiana-specific compliance requirements.

More case studies are added to this page on an ongoing basis. If you do not see your specific situation reflected here yet, the underlying capabilities are in place. Aegis handles a wide range of commercial and industrial environmental projects. Reach out directly to discuss your situation.

How Aegis Achieved Regulatory Closure on a Commercial UST Release in Indiana

The situation: A 6,000-gallon heating oil UST beneath a commercial office property in Indiana began releasing petroleum into the surrounding soil. Oil was visible at the main entrance. Petroleum vapors spread through the building while it remained occupied. The tank was buried beneath concrete and limestone infrastructure, complicating access.

What Aegis did: Immediate containment to stop the spread. Full environmental assessment including targeted soil and groundwater sampling. Excavation and removal of petroleum-impacted soil. Proper disposal of affected materials at licensed facilities. UST removal and recycling. Restoration of the site to a condition consistent with commercial use. Direct regulatory coordination with Indiana state environmental authorities from start to finish.

The outcome: Indiana issued a formal No Further Action (NFA) determination. The contamination source was fully removed, all analytical results came back below regulatory screening levels, and no ongoing environmental risk was identified. The property owner’s environmental liability was officially closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a No Further Action (NFA) determination?

An NFA determination is a formal written finding from a state environmental agency, such as IDEM in Indiana, confirming that a contaminated site has been cleaned up to required standards and no further remediation is needed. It is the regulatory endpoint that officially ends state oversight of the site and clears the associated environmental liability.

Do I need an environmental consultant for a UST issue on my commercial property?

If a UST has released petroleum or other regulated substances, Indiana law requires notification to IDEM and appropriate response actions. Working with a licensed environmental consultant ensures those actions are completed correctly, documented thoroughly, and submitted to the agency in a way that moves the case toward closure rather than prolonged oversight.

How long does commercial environmental remediation take?

Timeline depends on the extent and type of contamination, site conditions, and regulatory requirements. Some cases resolve in months; more complex sites take longer. The key factor is whether the consulting firm manages the process efficiently, communicates proactively with the agency, and produces documentation that meets regulatory standards from the first submission.

What types of commercial properties does Aegis serve?

Aegis works with commercial property owners, industrial facility operators, real estate developers, institutional property owners, and government clients across Indiana and surrounding Midwest states. Projects range from pre-acquisition Phase I assessments to active contamination response and regulatory closure.

Will more case studies be added here?

Yes. Aegis handles a wide range of environmental projects across commercial and industrial sectors. Additional case studies covering different project types, contaminant scenarios, and client situations will be published on this page as they are completed.
