Eliminate Your UST Liability with Turn-Key Decommissioning

Secure your property’s future, maximize state reimbursement, and achieve “No Further Action” status with Indiana’s trusted environmental partners.

Managing an aging underground storage tank (UST) is a critical liability concern. As tanks age, the risk of structural failure and environmental release increases significantly. Proactive removal costs a fraction of the cost of reactive remediation expenses and legal fees, which can escalate quickly if a leak reaches groundwater. Aegis Environmental provides a seamless, turn-key solution to remove your liability before it leaks.

Why “Tank Yanking” Is a Costly Mistake

Many contractors offer to physically “yank” a tank but leave the regulatory paperwork behind. In Indiana, a tank is considered “closed” only after the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) approves a Site Assessment Report.

Our Turn-Key Process includes:

  • Permitting & Notification: Managing mandatory IDEM 30-day notifications and coordination with local fire departments.
  • Safe Excavation: OSHA and EPA-compliant removal, vapor monitoring, and liquid disposal.
  • Precision Sampling: Following IDEM’s mandatory sampling matrix for soil and groundwater.
  • Site Closure: We work toward achieving “No Further Action” (NFA) status or “Unconditional Closure”—the gold standard for protecting your property value.

Proactive vs. Reactive Management

Cost Category Proactive Removal Reactive Cleanup (Leak)
Initial Excavation Managed & Budgeted Emergency Response Rates
Soil Remediation Generally Minimal Extensive Removal Required
Groundwater Treatment Often Avoided Multi-Year Treatment Likely
Regulatory Standing Compliant Closure Potential Notices of Violation

FAQs

What is a “turn-key” UST removal?

A turn-key service handles every step of the process. This includes initial 30-day state notifications, physical tank removal, soil sampling, laboratory analysis, and filing the final closure report with IDEM to obtain your closure letter, or a ‘No Further Action’ letter if a release has occurred.

How long does the process take?

While the physical removal typically takes 1 to 3 days, the regulatory timeline is longer. You must notify IDEM 30 days before work begins. After removal, lab results and IDEM’s final review usually take several months to complete.

What if my tank is already leaking?

If a release is detected, Aegis performs a Site Characterization to determine the extent of the impact. We then assist you in accessing the Excess Liability Trust Fund (ELTF) to help cover eligible cleanup and remediation costs.

Are unregistered “orphan” tanks eligible for funding?

Unregistered tanks are a high risk. If they aren’t registered, you may be ineligible for state funds and face significant regulatory exposure. We can help you identify and register these tanks to mitigate your legal risks.
